Hi Kjeld,
Yes, you should be able to open your QuarkXPress 4.x documents directly in
InDesign. InDesign cannot automatically convert later Quark documents (v5,
v6, or v7). If you have these, you need to back-save from, for example,
from Quqrk 7 to Quark 6, then from 6 to 5, then from 5 to 4.
Or, there are utilities that you can purchase that convert Quark 5,6, or 7
documents to InDesign.
Once the documents are converter, things should pretty much work. Sometimes
Quark automatic text boxes aren¹t converted correctly, though, especially if
your masters have a lot of threaded text boxes/frames. In this case, you
might need to set the autoflow thread in the first box of your text flow on
each page of your master spreads (see the set/clear autoflow thread toggle
in the Object menu), and then thread through any other frames on the
masters.
Also, the InDesign paragraph composer works differently than Quark¹s
(Leading, for example, is a character attribute in InDesign). So, you might
need to adjust spacing a bit.
Finally, if you are using «numtochar(11)» or «numtochar(12)» to insert
frame/page breaks, you¹ll need to replace these with the literal characters.
Regards,
Joe Mathia
