[EmData] can't-change-character-styles error

Hi David,

Ah, you're using InDesign/InData. InDesign/InData is a LOT less forgiving
than QuarkXPress/Xdata with this particular error, and a lot more prone to
it.

Since Xdata/InData assigns styling solely based on the styling of the
Xdata/InData statement, the statement must carry the same styling attributes
throughout: from the beginning chevron through the final closing
chevron/paragraph return.

The difficulty with InDesign is that many attributes that are paragraph
attributes in QuarkXpress, such as leading and tracking, are, by default,
character attributes in InDesign.

So, you could have subtle attribute changes at the character level that are
invisible at the paragraph level. Place your type tool cursor at the
beginning of the statement and arrow through it, watching the leading,
tracking, etc. values. Chances are that you'll see a blip.

This is most often caused by copying and pasting to create statements.

And, even trying to force a re-styling (shift+option/alt) doesn't remove all
of the attribute vestiges left behind.

I'm afraid that the most reliable fix is to indeed re-type the entire
offending statement, and then deleting the old one.

InDesign does give a lot more power than Quark in this regard, but this is
the price we have to pay. I'm interested to see how Quark 8 behaves in this
regard...

Joe Mathia
