[EmData] can't-change-character-styles error

I'm getting the error message "You can't change character styles  
here, inside an Xdata statement."
I know what that means but ...... the error keeps sending me back to  
the same place in the prototype, and there has been no change in  
style or character at that point or any other point in the prototype.

So is there another reason why I keep getting the error message?
